Hello. Me again. You know, the one with good intentions, bad blogging habits?
Right.
So about that second child...
In my last post, I said the mister and I weren't entirely on the same page about how to add to our family. That's true but we have always been in agreement that we wanted another child. Where we differed, was some of the specifics.
For our first adoption we were open to any geography and any ethnicity. As we began to talk about adding another child to our family I wanted to revisit both of those options. The mister felt like we should still be as open this time around. I disagreed for a couple of reasons that boiled down to our current family composition as well as adding another first family to our lives in a way we could see them as often as we'd like.
I was hesitant to add one child of color to our family. We honestly never expected to have a child that looked like us and that has been a large adjustment. I know that might not make sense to some of you but we thought long and hard about being a visibly transracial family. We were prepared to answer the kinds of questions and deal with the situations that entails. We weren't prepared for statements like "she looks like she's yours" (duh..she is ours).
The mister's argument was that since we were prepared to parent a child of color then, we should be prepared to do it now. I agreed but with a caveat: if our next child is a child of color, I wanted to adopt a third child.
I feel pretty strongly that all of my children have a mirror within the family. I really want them to have someone who looks like them. I just thought my children would likely look more like each other and less like us. And neither of us was sure we wanted 3 children.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago when we put together a plan. We figured we'd plant the seed for adoption #2 with our adoption consultant this summer, start work on updating our materials/website/letters right about the time Tall Girl turns 2, and maybe have a new addition to our family sometime in the next year or two. We figured we'd have time to talk through all these questions and decide what would work best for our family.
Well, plans have changed. Our consultant has more leads than families and a couple of weeks ago she asked if we were serious and said she had 3 situations for us. All Nice Pregnant Ladies with very similar names and due dates. Long story slightly shorter, one of said NPLs is flying into town to meet us this weekend.
Sydney called us the first time two years to the day that Ms FoodNetwork first called. She's lovely and easy to talk to and we have lots in common. She has a few things that are important to her and we seem to be a great fit for that. She's talked to Ms FoodNetwork as well and they've hit it off. She currently lives a long drive or short flight from us. Her dad is flying in as well, the rest of her family lives much farther away (as in a state I joked about wanting to exclude from our search for another adoption because we have friends and family almost everywhere but the Great Plains).
So over the long weekend, we'll get to know each other, head over to our adoption consultant's monthly gathering, engage in some tourist behavior and see what happens. Sydney is due to give birth in about 8 WEEKS! I can barely comprehend that right now. There's a chance we'll have a baby in SEPTEMBER. Holy priceless collection of Etruscan snoods!
PS I'm much more likely to blog about this as I process it all. Sydney and I are FB friends so there won't be much posting there at all. I'd appreciate if those of y'all that know me there keep in on the qt as well. Thanky!
oh my goodness! 8 weeks!
thinking of you guys (and good to hear from you at length!)
