I'm sitting here in my hotel room in Chicago and wishing I had my previous hotel room. Why is it that when you have no time at all somewhere you get a kickass room and when you're planning on hanging out in your room, ordering room service and working the night away you get a tiny little pillbox of a room?
I'm not complaining. This hotel is nice. The downstairs is gorgeous. I tend to just hunker down when I'm working and just need the basics: high speed internet and room service.
I used to do this a lot more that I do now. I'm so glad that my current work life doesn't involve the kind of travel that my previous one did. I know I've said that before but it bears repeating. I had a pretty low quality of life when I was a road warrior. Sure, I always flew in first class and I was always on a concierge floor in nearly every hotel if I wasn't in some podunk town. It might sound fun or glamorous but it's fair from it. I'd much rather be able to spend almost all of my nights at home with the mister and our dogs and cats.
But you can be sure that I will enjoy a (relatively) snore-free bed where I can stretch out as much as I want and no kitty will be peering down at me at 3 am hoping to play.
oh yes, I so agree with you. beautiful hotels are just really not that great when you're on your own in them.

I feel lucky that I'm traveling less for my job, but I think that some travel is just important for me even if I no longer have enough mileage for the perks!

Well, I for one am disappointed that you aren't going to see GFG while you're in town.
Sigh.

Kudos to those of you who have to travel for work. I think teaching is the one remaining job that doesn't require that lifestyle.
I'm glad you get to stretch out a bit, but it's sort of bittersweet isn't it?
